3 Reasons to Stop Being a People Pleaser at Work

STOP IT!

At some point in our careers, we have helped others at work. It could be a simple thing such as volunteering to attend a meeting in someone’s place.

A people pleaser may even stay late to assist a colleague with a project that they are not assigned.  The list goes on. It is great to lend a helping hand and be supportive sometimes, but it can become a problem.

People Pleasers are seen as those who want to be helpful, however, whenever and wherever they can. Always willing to go above and beyond for those who need them.

Here are 3 reasons to stop being a people pleaser at work.

  1. Due to their willingness to always want or need to be helpful people pleasers are at risk of being taken advantage of by others.
  2. At work, colleagues may view a people pleaser as someone who sucks up to the manager or boss.
  3. Being a people pleaser can be exhausting and not leave much time for doing your job.

People Pleasers have to begin to understand their limitations and ask themselves the questions:

  • How far am I willing to go for the other person?
  • Would they do the same for me?
  • Am I being taken advantage of because of my willingness to help?
  • Am I meeting my own needs?
  • Is this something I want to do or feel I have to do?

Take time to think about what you are being asked or even told to do for others.
